The plied-back section of the top bobbin is S, so it's a Z single; and the plied-back section of the lower bobbin is Z, so it's an S single. I should have clarified that in the posting -- so now, I have. Thanks, Kathy S.!Amelia of Ask The Bellwetherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00837966439073456616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183250014956175356.post-42760226183605680032008-08-10T12:42:00.000-07:002008-08-10T12:42:00.000-07:00The photos of bobbins with Z and S twist singles a...The photos of bobbins with Z and S twist singles are labeled wrong. Fibers in Z go from right to left (top to bottom) just like the axis of the z and in S from left to right. Or the photos are flopped over.
KathyKathy Spitlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02802501330552819960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183250014956175356.post-12566419113322348582008-05-11T09:23:00.000-07:002008-05-11T09:23:00.000-07:00In weaving you can do all kinds of things with bot...In weaving you can do all kinds of things with both direction and amount of twist. You get interesting stripes if you use either weft or warp that alternates twist, you get collapse weave that pleats itself if you use high twist singles.Katherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13509858690867207452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183250014956175356.post-34156003625729375312008-04-24T10:08:00.000-07:002008-04-24T10:08:00.000-07:00I crochet with my handspun as well as knit and I h...I crochet with my handspun as well as knit and I have never had any trouble with the twist (I spin singles Z, ply S). It's also an interesting fiber in that it likes to be wetted while being spun.

I haven't heard of other fibers also being that way, so I'd be curious to know if there are others that twist S naturally.Amelia of Ask The Bellwetherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00837966439073456616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183250014956175356.post-35642131750229987382008-04-20T20:46:00.000-07:002008-04-20T20:46:00.000-07:00Hi Amelia,Not sure about embroidery and such but I...Hi Amelia,
Not sure about embroidery and such but I have read that linen yarn does best with s twist then of course plied with a z. This has something to do with the structure of the flax. I'm thinking that it might be that the flax has a slight s twist in the way the fiber grows. I do have a flax spinning book. Maybe I should pull it out and be sure ;)kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10527456498728653490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6183250014956175356.post-68540207926479099132008-04-17T16:34:00.000-07:002008-04-17T16:34:00.000-07:00@Eleanor: Hmmm, that's interesting to consider.
